City and County of San Francisco Department of Environment Toxics Reduction Program

Assist the Toxics Reduction Program in the development and implementation of programs to protect the environment and the health and safety of the City and the private sector workers as well as the general public, including:
- Green Business Program: Completed over 60 chemicals use audits of hotels, restaurants, offices and other facilities applying for certification under the San Francisco Green Business Program and provided recommendations for less toxic options; created audit protocol for hotels, general businesses (2005-2008);
- Used Motor Oil Recycling Program: authored a study on used oil diversion rates inSan Francisco, with an emphasis on the DIY population (2005);
- Hazardous Waste Management Program for City departments, commercial sectors, and residents: provided training to City staff on less toxic janitorial options (2007); residential outreach on household cleaners in partnership with Chinatown CBO (2006-2007); drafted factsheets on hazardous waste best management practices for commercial and residential audiences (2006-2008); strategy and analysis for outreach to high-school students on health hazards of personal care products (2007)
- Toxic Chemical Reduction Program: Technical research, analysis and recommendations on a wide variety of toxics reduction issues including Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), pesticide alternatives, national and state regulation; drafted comment letters to California Air Resources Board on garment cleaning regulations, Bureau of Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation on flame retardant standard for bedding. Research on health impacts of phthalates and bisphenol-A (BPA) to support City ban of these chemicals in toys; conducted staff training. Association of Bay Area Governments
