EPHC’s Dr. Ann Blake and environmental health colleague and sister alumna Aimee Boulanger are featured in the Mount Holyoke College Alumnae Quarterly Winter 2015 issue; both have been deeply involved with Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE), a non-profit in Missoula, Montana, whose mission is to “amplify women’s voices to eliminate the toxic chemicals that harm our health and communities”. The Alumnae Quarterly article highlights WVE’s recent report, Chem Fatale, focused on the lifetime low-level exposure concerns from feminine care products. WVE strongly supports the recently re-introduced Robin Danielson Feminine Hygiene Product Safety Act (Maloney, D-NY) focused on protecting women from potential health risks associated with feminine care products. The Robin Danielson Feminine Hygiene Product Safety Act (H.R. 1708)– named after a victim of Toxic Shock Syndrome from tampon use – would require the National Institute of Health (NIH) to support or conduct research on the risks posed by the presence of dioxin, colorants, dyes, preservatives, chemical fragrance and other chemicals used in tampons, pads and menstrual cups, as well as feminine wipes, douches and sprays. The bill also requires public reporting of the research.
